Seeing Through the Dark

Seeing in the Dark

...the distance from dark to light...

And what will I have then
When these eyes dry out?
When the pigment drains away
And the green grass delights no more?
When the wary thrush,
Perching precariously on toothpick legs
Disappears completely
Into the background
In a coat of hidden colours?
Will his fear fade too?

Will the ink from this pen
Turn to white
And lay useless on the page?
Words about nothing
For no one to read out loud?
Will the only place worth writing on
Be the blood-red insides of me?
Poems trapped inside
The clogged arteries
Or that hardened heart of mine?

And where will your eyes settle then
When mine are gone for good?
Will they stare right past me
As if I was never there at all,
No shadow to contrast the light?
Or will they lift up and over me
Drift higher and higher
On a heavenly current
Toward those divine gates
I couldn’t reach?
